Deferring Your Property Taxes

All deferment applications, including renewal applications, must be submitted online through the Provincial Tax Deferment Application Portal. For more information on deferment programs including each program's equity requirements, please visit www.gov.bc.ca/propertytaxdeferment

The City of Surrey will no longer accept paper deferment applications. The new online Property Tax Deferment application process will make deferring your taxes easier and will lead to reduced application review and approval times.

Some of the items on your tax notice cannot be deferred. You will still be required to make payment for applicable user fees (water, sewer, waste collection, and/or secondary suite fees), if applicable, and claim your Home Owner Grant, if eligible, to avoid penalties. If the deferal application is not approved, a penalty may be applied if full payment is not received before September 30, 2020.

User fees, property taxes, and utilities can be paid via online or telephone banking directly with your financial institution. In light of the ongoing and rapidly evolvingg COVID-19 pandemic, Surrey City Hall is open by appointment only so it is recommended that residents make any payments online, if possible.

Existing Deferment Agreements

If you have an existing deferment agreement, you will be able to renew your existing agreement online at gov.bc.ca/propertytaxdeferment. You can also select auto-renewal and your account will be automatically renewed annually, if you still meet all the eligibility requirements. Auto-renewing is easy and simple.

Before applying or renewing your online deferment application, please ensure your property tax account is up to date by completing the following:

  1. Claim your Home Owner Grant, if eligible, available in May
  2. Pay your Property Tax Notice items that cannot be deferred such as: garbage, recycling, organics, and secondary suite service charge fees, available in May
  3. Pay your annual or metered utility bill

Your deferment application or renewal may be rejected by the Province if you have not completed the above requirements.

There are two Tax Deferment options available:
